If you are one of those discriminating alpaca fanciers who appreciate the "Silkie style" of fleece, you should give our Belafonte serious consideration. Although he was a "Bay Black" in his cria fleece, his second growth is True Black. Everyone who looks at him asks, "He is a huacaya, isn't he?", because his long, draping, bright, well-defined bundles look very much like the locks of a suri who is "locked to the skin". Belafonte's blanket was the first raw fleece I sold this year to the local fiber artists--they always "Ooh and Ahh" over his fleece.
Our Belafonte has been a joy to own. An adorable, good-natured ball of black fleece as a cria, he is maturing into a solid framed male with fantastic coverage, and the most amazing long staples of well-defined brignt bundles of black fleece. There really is a Suri-like drape to these bundles because they are so long, bright, silky, and heavy--in 2015 he placed #12 of 19048 (Top 1%) for Staple Length EPD, and top 3% for Fleece Weight EPD. He has a perfect bite and a terrific head shape to boot! Belafonte's bloodlines can't be beat--his sire is full brother to Aussie Guns 'N Roses and Aussie .38 Special. His maternal grandsire is a silver grey champion from the respected Misty Ridge breeding program. His dam is a lovely large black female and a wonderful mother. Belafonte is still an adorable, sweet little guy to us, but we see the emergence of a male of consequence here.
